Abstract

Aim of Study: Cardiovascular effects of Zingiber officinale Roscoe in type 2 diabetes patients over a period of 6 weeks.

Methods: Our study was a non-randomized single-arm clinical trial with a before and after design, carried out over a period of 8months in Type 2 diabetes mellitus  patients with HbA1c between 42 to 64mmol/mol (6-8%) and no change in anti-diabetic treatment during the last three months. Intervention consisted in the administration of powdered ginger extracts in the form of capsules at a dose of 2g/day, for 6 weeks. Before and after intervention; bioelectrical impedance analysis, blood pressure measurements, fasting blood sugar, glycated haemoglobin, lipid profiles, liver function tests, kidney function tests and full blood counts were evaluated. Morphological workup including Electrocardiography, transthoracic heart ultrasounds and Ambulatory Blood Pressure Measurements.

Results: 21 diabetes patients (5 males and 16 females) were included with median age of 54 [51-61] years. We observed a non-significant 12.5% drop in A Wave velocity (cm/s) and a non-significant 20% increase in e’ wave velocity (cm/s). A 16.7% increase in E-Wave velocity (cm/s) and a 3.4% non-significant increase in duration of isovolumetric relaxation was observed. We had a 2.9% drop in average 24hr systolic blood pressure, a 7.9% drop in average 24hour diastolic blood pressure.

Conclusion: After 6 weeks of Zingiber officinale add-on therapy, there is an improvement in  diastolic function, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, as evidenced by a 20%  increase in e’ wave velocity and a 12.5% decrease in A wave velocity.
