Objective: To determine the causes of rehospitalization for heart failure (HF) at the University Hospital Center of Brazzaville.

Patients and methods: this descriptive study was conducted from 1 April 2014 to 31 June 2015 (15 months) in the Cardiology of Internal Medicine department at the University Hospital of Brazzaville including patients admitted for recurrence of HF. The Framingham criteria were used for diagnosis.

Results: A total of 91 patients, including 54 women (59.3%) were included. The mean age was 62 ± 16 years (range 24 to 89 years). The frequency of rehospitalization for HF was 19%. The mean time to consultation was 30 ± 34 days (range 1 to 150 days). The average number of rehospitalization was 2 ± 0.8 (range 1 to 5). The HF was often global (80.2%). The main etiologies were hypertensive heart disease (43.9%), dilated cardiomyopathy (30.8%), ischemic heart disease (9.9%), the valvulopathy (7.7%) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (4, 4%). The factors of decompensation were dieting gap (70%), discontinuation of maintenance therapy (62.2%), influenza-like illness (16.7%), arrhythmia (12.2%), severe hypertension (10%). Associated pathologies were renal failure (35.2%), anemia (24.2%) and diabetes (16.5%). The cardiogenic shock was noted in 4 cases. The death rate was 5.5%.

Conclusion: HF readmissions are frequent and often linked to the regime spreads and a stop of maintenance therapy. It is necessary therefore to educate patients.
